Blackpool Armed Forces Week

Celebrating Britain’s Armed Forces; past, present and future.

Armed Forces Week is Blackpool’s opportunity to say thank you to our heroes. From June 19-25 the whole resort comes together welcoming serving military personnel, veterans and cadets, with a wide range of activities targeted at them and their families as well as the many thousands of people visiting Blackpool.

Armed Forces Week Flag Raising Ceremony

19 June 2017

Location: Blackpool Town Hall

Blackpool Armed forces week officially begins with the raising of the Armed Forces Day Flag above the Town Hall.

Prior to Blackpool joining the nation in this countrywide tribute, the Armed Forces Day flag will be paraded along the Promenade by the Duke of Lancaster’s regiment whilst the Mayor and Armed Forces Champion pay tribute to the Armed Forces on the Town Hall steps. Once the flag arrives at the Town Hall and before it is returned to the Mayor, it is folded and passed to local school children from Weeton Barracks Primary School who then deliver it to the towns Freeman, Jimmy Armfield CBE.

At 10:30 Blackpool will join 10 Downing Street, other Local Authorities and Military Associations by raising the flag above the town hall to show support for the service men and women of our Armed forces, past and present.

Music For Heroes

Tickets: FREE but includes a £1.00 booking fee per ticket, available from Blackpool Winter Gardens and the VisitBlackpool Tourist Information Centre.

Blackpool says thank you to the Armed Forces past and present, with this musical extravaganza in Blackpool’s famous Empress Ballroom.

Now in its 9th year, this free concert has become one of the many highlights of the Armed Forces Week celebrations. The Ballroom will host a night of music, comedy and live performance with a full program of entertainment. Music for Heroes will be headlined by the excellent MOD band the Band of the Kings Division and will feature the Irish Guard Singers, The Land Girls, Blackpool Music Service and much, much more.

Terms and Conditions: 1. This ticket is issued subject to the Rules and Regulations of the venue and Event Partner. 2. Neither the venue or the Event Partner, shall have any further liability beyond the face value of the ticket purchased plus the relevant per ticket booking fee. 3. Tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded after purchase unless the performance is cancelled. 4. Armed Forces Careers Information Day

Location: Army Recruitment, Houndshill Shopping Centre

In partnership with Blackpool Council Connexions Service, representatives from the Royal Navy, Army and RAF will be available to offer careers guidance to anyone interested in joining the Armed Forces. Come along to the Army recruitment shop,at Houndshill Shopping Centre between 10:00 and 17:00 and speak to the professionals. For further information contact Connexions on 01253 754840.

Going to the Flicks

20 – 22 June 2017

Location: Odeon Cinema Blackpool

Tickets: Invitation only

Going to the Flicks is a special war-time cinema experience especially for local primary school children. The specially commissioned education film covers Blackpool during WWI, what it was like for children during WWII, footage from more recent conflicts, the Union Flag, the National Anthem, and a short Laurel & Hardy sketch. A question and answer session with tri-service military personnel and veterans will follow the film.

Armed Forces Week Afternoon Tea Dance

21 June 2017

Tickets: £9.95 available from The Blackpool Tower

The famous Mighty Wurlitzer will be played at an Armed Forces themed afternoon tea dance in the magnificent surroundings of Blackpool’s famous Tower Ballroom. At 14:00 the Blackpool Standards will march to welcome the Mayor of Blackpool who will be accompanied by serving personnel form the 4th Battalion, the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment.

Marton Institute

Marton Institute host an evening of entertainment from Grace Lamont, alongside bingo and a raffle to celebrate Armed Forces Week. A free of charge Hot Pot supper and dessert will also be served

Houndshill Shopping Centre Celebrates Armed Forces Week

Houndshill celebrates Armed Forces Week with military weapons and equipment displays from the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment.

On 24th June enjoy free war-time musical entertainment including performances from the Irish Guards Singers.

Fylde Memorial Arboretum

Located in the fields next to Moor park school, the Fylde Memorial Arboretum stands as an area that provides the service associations, and the people of Blackpool and the Fylde, a place of peace and beauty in which to remember their fallen comrades and loved ones.

As part of Blackpool Armed Forces week, the Fylde Ex-Service Liason Commitee will host a service of dedication at the centre of the Memorial Arboretum’s Glade area. All are welcome to attend the service that will include Mayoral presence from all three boroughs of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.

Armed Forces Week Grand Gala Dinner

Members of the Armed Forces, veterans, families, friends and supporters are invited to enjoy a four course meal whilst being treated to the musical of the Stowe Brass band.

After dinner the invited Guest of Honour will pay tribute to the Armed Forces before the Blackpool Armed Forces Week special recognition award is presented to this year’s winner.

Following the formalities there will be a raffle and then entertainment from a top-class cabaret line-up and band.

Dress code: lounge suits, blazers or black tie. Medals may be worn.

National Armed Forces Day

St John’s – 24 June 2015

Enjoy a full day of entertainment across Blackpool Town Centre and Promenade to celebrate Armed Forces Day.
In St Johns Square there will be a stage featuring live musical performances from the Irish Guards Singers, Land Girls, The Band & Corps of Drums of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (Lancashire) and much more.

A number of vintage and modern day military vehicles will form a static display both along the Promenade and in the town centre, as well as the famous replica Spitfire and her ground crew who will be on hand to answer all of your questions. There will also be stalls from the Military associations, decommissioned Military items for all to view and fun and games for all the family.

The Duke of Lancaster’s unit in the Hounds Hill Shopping centre will feature an exhibition from the Great War heritage Project, talks from a local Blackpool historian about the history of the Armed Forces in Blackpool, and archive videos and imagery showing what Blackpool was like during both World Wars.

Blackpool Armed Forces week will also be hosting a careers and information until where people who are interested in joining the Armed Forces can find out more details on a possible career in the Forces.

Armed Forces Day Military Concert

Armed Forces Day is brought to a climax with a full live concert by the Band & Corps of Drums of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (Lancashire).

Based at Castle Armoury in Bury, the Band and Drum Corps of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (Lancashire) was founded by its president Lieutenant Col (Rtd) Eric Davidson MBE DL to keep alive the tradition of the former constituent regiments; The Lancashire Fusiliers XX and The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. The band has currently around 30 members with the drums numbering around 20. The uniform proudly worn is that of the regular regiment which is headquartered in the Tower of London.

As an individual unit they have travelled the length and breadth of the country performing their now famous ‘black light’ show; precision drumming under cover of darkness, the movement of their sticks only visualised by the emission of ultra violet light.

In addition the band have a full set of fanfare trumpets which have featured in events such as the rugby league finals at Wembley and Old Trafford and the Mayor-making ceremonies each year in Bury.

Blackpool Armed Forces Day Military Concert is a journey through some of the finest composers in history, featuring both military and classical arrangements.

Sunday Morning Service & Parade

Location: Blackpool Cenotaph/Promenade

Blackpool comes together to honour and unite Britain’s Armed Forces past, present and future in an emotional and fitting tribute to the Armed Forces Past, Present and Future.

Attending the service will be veteran’s associations, cadets, serving military as well as their friends, families and associates. Everyone is welcome to the service of appreciation that takes place within the grounds of Blackpool grade II listed War Memorial.

Following the service, Blackpool invites members of the Armed Forces, veterans and cadets to join in the military parade That will be led along the Promenade by the Band & Corp of Drums of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Friends, family and members of the general public are invited to line the route, cheer and wave their Union Flags.

Those wanting to lay wreaths may do so after the service.

Blackpool Taxi Pull – 10th Anniversary

25 June 2017

Time: From approx. 12:00

Location: Start on Promenade in front of Blackpool Cenotaph


Raising money for Ex-Service Charities, local taxi drivers will pull three London type taxis in red, white and blue setting off from in front of Blackpool’s Cenotaph, heading to the Pleasure Beach, turning round and travelling back to the Cenotaph.

The Submariners Sizzling BBQ

Admission: FREE

BBQ Food Prices: £2 for a burger, £3 for a double burger, Add £0.50p for cheese, £1 for a hotdog.

Discount: 50% off BBQ food for all uniformed regular service personnel.

Blackpool Submariners Association will host a special sizzling BBQ event for serving personnel and veterans, and their families after the Sunday service and parade. All locals and visitors to the Fylde coast are also welcome.

Clubs & Institutes

Throughout the week, activities supporting the Armed Forces will take place in many venues across Blackpool, including The Royal British Legion.
